Description
Well known Humboldt Bay (California) region outdoorsman, amiable, big Joe Dickerson of Wyandotte and Scottish ancestry made this hollow Pacific black brant decoy c. 1930's. Length is approx 21", height is approx 13". Head and neck are a 1" plywood insert in an all redwood body. It was used by the exclusive Pacific Lumber Company (Scotia, CA) brant hunting club, for which Joe guided on south Humboldt Bay (Eureka, CA) sand spit below Table Bluff. He was a very talented craftsman, making his own decoys and ocean fishing boat. In the mid 1970's we retrieved a few of Joe's decoys from his barn in Loleta, CA which had flooded during the huge 1964 northern California and Eel River Bottoms flood. Fascinating decoy history! Cosmetic conditions can be seen in photos.
